Mahjong Solitaire Tiles and Matching Rules

Recognizing tile families quickly makes the puzzle easier to read. Mahjong Solitaire borrows its symbols from traditional Mahjong but uses them in a single-player matching game.

Practice tile matching

Numbered suits

Circles, bamboo and characters are numbered from one to nine. In most layouts, a numbered tile matches only another tile with the same suit and number.

Winds and dragons

The four winds and three dragons are honor tiles. Each symbol matches an identical copy, so check color and character details before selecting a pair.

Flowers and seasons

Bonus tiles are the main exception to identical matching. Any flower can match another flower, and any season can match another season. A flower cannot match a season.

Hidden and surprise tiles

Some strategic stages conceal a tile until it becomes free or change a surprise tile suit when revealed. These mechanics add information management while preserving a valid solution path.
